Fluency Folder: Your child will keep a red "Fluency Folder" in their backpack. It will travel to and from school daily. The folder will contain a poetry notebook and short readings from the Superkids program. Fluency is gained when familiar text is reread. Please read from the folder often.
READING
-
The SuperKids reading program is a fun and exciting approach that teaches your child to read and write. First-graders learn more complex letter-sound relationships. They apply these new skills to longer decodable stories and informational texts and in their writing. Reading comprehension and fluency are emphasized. All skills are carefully integrated and taught in multiple modes—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic—to reinforce language learning.
YOU are an important part of our reading curriculum. Have your child read to you 10-15 minutes each night. Don't forget to fill out the reading log and return to school when it is complete. Enjoy spending time reading with your little one. :-)
MATH
-
EnVision Math in grade 1 focuses on critical areas such as: (1) developing understanding of and strategies for addition and subtraction; (2) developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones; (3) developing understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths as iterating length units; and (4) reasoning about attributes of, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes.
Math facts are very important to know and are an important part of first-grade. Addition and subtraction flashcards are a great strategy for practicing.
