Welcome to Ms. Nancy Balogh's Language Arts Class.
About the Teacher
Ms. Balogh received a bachelor's degree in Special Education from William Paterson University and certification in K-8 Education. She has been a resource teacher and an in-class support teacher in the Hanover Township School District for 26 years. Her teaching philosophy is to provide a structured, skill-based approach to language arts in a positive and supportive learning environment.
During Period 7/8 Language Arts, daily classwork includes grammar review and practice, vocabulary exercises, writing skills assignments and tasks related to the writing process. Vocabulary lessons focused on academic vocabulary are introduced every 2 weeks and an assessment concludes each lesson. A weekly full-page Journal paragraph is assigned to provide practice in expanded paragraph form. Daily practice of writing skills and the writing process is guided by lessons from Sentence Mastery (Steck-Vaughn), Text-Based Nonfiction Writing (Evan-Moor) and Daily 6-Trait Writing (Evan-Moor). The six writing traits which provide areas of instructional focus are ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice and conventions. Four and five paragraph essay assignments encompass the personal narrative, persuasive, compare/contrast and informative styles of composition.
Homework is regularly posted on Google Classroom. Vocabulary workbook lessons are regularly assigned for homework. A weekly, expanded Journal paragraph is considered a homework writing assignment. A student may choose to complete a task for homework in order to have work prepared for the date due.
Each marking period grade is comprised of grades and scores from classwork, tests, quizzes and writing assignments. These components are equally weighted.
