  • Reading Comprehension Assessment

Four times a year, students are given a reading inventory.  It is a reading assessment which combines comprehension and decoding scores to give us an idea of reading levels.  The score is called a "Lexile" score.

It is helpful for teachers to know the reading level of their students to present material that is just enough of a challenge without causing them frustration in comprehension.  When students are reading at their level they can make improvements in decoding, comprehension and fluency. If kids are reading books that are too difficult for them, they won't become better readers! Lexile scores loosely correlate to grade equivalencies.

This chart gives an idea of where kids Lexile should be according to their grade level.
