Kindergarten - 5th Grade (All Grades): Mr. Cashen's Typing Challenge! - This week, all grades will be putting their typing skills to the test with Mr. Cashen's Typing Challenge! (see link above) For this game, students will try their best to get the HIGHEST score that they can in 30 seconds! They can play the game as many times as they want to try to beat their previous score (please play at least 10 times)! Then, when they think they have the best and HIGHEST score that they can get, please have them use the Google Form link above to send me their name, class, and best score out of all their games! Next week, I'll send out a video announcing the highest score in each class! While this does include some friendly competition, the goal is to improve their own typing skills and have fun! Please follow the directions below to get started. Thanks for all of your help!

Week #8 - Distance Learning Flexible Learning Plan - Week of 5/11/20

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade: Beach Clean-Up in Kodable! - It was so great to see everyone's mazes last week in Maze Maker! They did such a great job designing their mazes for classmates to solve, while applying what they've learned over the past few weeks. Today's activity, called "Beach Clean-up" will be our final activity in Kodable. Here, students will have to design mazes throughout the beach and create programs that will make the beaches cleaner for sea animals! Like Maze Maker, this activity combines everything that we've learned in Kodable from Sequences and Conditions to Loops and Functions. Please follow the steps below to get started. As always, thank you so much for your help!

3rd Grade - 5th Grade: Conquering Variables in CodeCombat! - I was amazed with how well everyone did with the levels involving Loops last week in CodeCombat! This is not always an easy concept, and it was great to see that they kept trying until they got it! This week will be our final lesson using CodeCombat. However, after this week, students can still login and move forward through additional levels that I will unlock if they want to go beyond what we covered over the past few weeks!

Today's levels, 15-19, will teach the concept of variables, which contain stored values that can change throughout the game, such as the "enemies" in CodeCombat! Here, we'll use variables to define the enemies so that we know which ones to defeat. There's a help video before level 15 that will go over variables, and I will discuss them in my intro video as well. Please follow the directions below to get started. As always, thank you so much for your help!

Week #7 - Distance Learning Flexible Learning Plan - Week of 5/4/20

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade: Maze Maker in Kodable! - I hope you're having a great week and enjoying the awesome weather! For this week's Computer class, we're putting together everything we've learned in Kodable to play a game called "Maze Maker"! Maze Maker gives students a chance to create their own mazes and have classmates try out their mazes too! While they should start off easy when making their first maze, I also encourage them to make a challenging maze too where their classmates will have to use a condition, loop or function to solve. Please follow the directions below to get started with the first maze and learn how to play classmates' mazes! As always, thanks for all of your help!

3rd Grade - 5th Grade: Conquering Loops in CodeCombat! - I hope you're having a great week and enjoying the awesome weather! Last week, everyone did an amazing job getting started with CodeCombat! This game becomes a little more challenging since students are typing out their code, rather than clicking and dragging blocks of code to write their programs! This week's levels, 9-14, are all about Loops! They will be learning about the "while(true)" loop that repeats code until a level is complete. Please follow the directions below to get started. We will be logging into the account that we created during last week's class. As always, thanks for all of your help!

Week #6 - Distance Learning Flexible Learning Plan - Week of 4/27/20

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade: Function Junction in Kodable! - I hope everything is going well! For this week's Computer class, we're going to be focusing on "Functions" through a game called "Function Junction" in Kodable! Functions are a set of steps that a programmer can easily call on and reuse again later in a program. In Function Junction, we will look for patterns in our code that can be made into a Function and used again later in our program. Please follow the directions below to get started. Thanks for all of your help with today's activity!

3rd Grade - 5th Grade: Adventures in Coding with CodeCombat! - I hope everything is going well! Over the past couple of weeks, we've been using blocks of code to build programs in Dance Party and Keep on Dancing. This week, I'm excited to be switching gears with our classes and playing a new game called "CodeCombat" that uses typed-out JavaScript code - coding that programmers use all the time! This approach will allow students to type their code and practice basic syntax, such as spelling, grammar, and punctuation in their code. CodeCombat provides amazing support throughout each level with hints, videos, and guided steps to complete each level if they get stuck. Please follow the directions below to get started. For the first week, we will start by creating a CodeCombat account using our SCHOOL Google accounts, which is included in the directions below. Thanks for all of your help!

Week #5 - Distance Learning Flexible Learning Plan - Week of Mon 4/20/20

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade: Adventures in Coding with Kodable! - I hope you had a great Spring Break and had some time to relax! For this week's computer class, we're going to continue coding with Kodable! They did such a great job with Sequence Sector and Condition Canyon last class. Today's class will teach them all about "repeat loops" in "Loopy Lagoon" and looking for patterns in their code! I also included a link to a second video below that teaches them how to use "Fuzz Builder", where they can create their very own FuzzBuzz to use while coding! Fuzz Builder is just for fun!

Below are the steps on getting started for today! If your child didn't finish each of the two sections in Sequence Sector and Condition Canyon from last class, they will need to finish those activities first in order to get to "Loopy Lagoon" for today's lesson. They will learn important coding skills in those two sections that will help them with Loopy Lagoon. Thanks for all of your help!

Week #4 - Distance Learning Flexible Learning Plan - Week of 4/6/20

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade: Adventures in Coding with Kodable! - This week we are switching gears to coding! For these lessons and activities, your children will learn more about why coding is an important skill and the basics of coding. This will get them ready for applying those skills to coding games that they can interact with and play! The goals of these activities are for them to use problem solving skills, debug (or "fix") their code on their own, and keep trying until they get it! We will be using a website called Kodable today! Please follow the steps below to get started. Thanks for all of your help!

3rd Grade - 5th Grade: Adventures in Typing Club!I hope you're having a great week and that everything is going well with Week #2 of Distance Learning! During our last Computer class, we focused on online keyboarding games and practiced the HOME ROW! Those games prepared your children for this week's adventures with a program we use in school called Typing Club! Typing Club teaches the Home Row with step-by-step levels that include lessons, games, and activities! While playing this game in school, they've had an opportunity to collect points, earn badges, and compete to get on the "scoreboard" for their class! While this game promotes some friendly competition, the goal is to improve Home Row skills at their own pace. This will be 3rd Grade's first day doing Typing Club, while 4th and 5th Grades will continue where they left off! Please have your child follow the steps below to get started! Thank you!
